The Process
Raw Information
Each statement starts with information from the architects and wider project team including drawings, plans, site photographs, maps, written content and technical information. The first step is going through everything and working out what needs to be included and how it all fits together.
Structure
Once I have everything, I start building the structure of the document. I work out the hierarchy of the information, what needs to stand out and how the different sections should flow together. This is where a 40-page document starts to become something much more manageable.
Design
From there I bring everything together through typography, grids, imagery, diagrams and page layouts. The aim isn't to decorate the information, but to make it easier to understand while keeping the whole document consistent from the first page to the last.
Refine
The final stage is going through the document page by page, checking layouts, imagery, spacing and consistency before making the final changes. With documents this large, small details can make a big difference, so there's a lot of refining before the finished statement is ready to go.
